Punta Cana Drinking Age, Resort Rules and Alcohol in Your Luggage

The Dominican Republic tourism authority states that the legal age to purchase and consume alcohol is 18. Bring acceptable proof of age and check the venue’s identification requirements. A resort wristband does not remove the need to comply with the law or the operator’s rules.

Resorts, bars and excursions have their own conditions

Ask whether your room rate includes alcoholic drinks, which brands or venues are excluded, and whether there are event or operating-hour restrictions. An adults-only hotel label and a legal drinking-age rule answer different questions. For a party boat excursion, confirm the minimum passenger age and beverage inclusions separately.

Can you bring alcohol into the Dominican Republic?

Aduanas’ current traveler manual lists up to five liters for adult passengers as a duty-free allowance. The tourism entry page still lists three liters. Because these official pages disagree, confirm your planned quantity directly with Aduanas before packing; the customs authority administers the allowance. Check airline liquid, baggage and alcohol-strength restrictions independently.

Taking rum or other drinks home

Your destination country has its own import allowances and age requirements. A duty-free purchase in the Dominican Republic does not guarantee exemption on arrival elsewhere. Keep receipts, check your connection’s security rules and protect bottles in accordance with airline baggage instructions.

The local drinking-age rule applies to visitors too; being American does not itself change it to the U.S. age threshold. A particular venue may impose additional admission conditions. For beach drinking or temporary sales restrictions, check the applicable local and venue rules for your date. For the drinks themselves, read about popular Dominican drinks and mamajuana.

Nightlife and water activities

Plan the return journey before going out, keep drinks under your control and do not drive after drinking. Avoid alcohol before swimming or boating activities where it affects judgment and coordination. Choose the excursion for its itinerary and safety arrangements as well as its atmosphere.

Use the money guide to plan payments and the all-inclusive guide to check what is included. For transport, confirm a private transfer appropriate to your route and departure time.
