Renting a car can suit an itinerary with independent outings, but compare the full cost and responsibilities before deciding. For an airport journey and a few tours with pickup, transfers may fit better. A vehicle reservation alone does not establish that you meet every driving or supplier requirement.

Documents and driver eligibility

Ask the supplier which license, passport, payment card and additional documents are required for your nationality and length of stay. Confirm minimum age, additional-driver rules and any young-driver charges. Verify the legal driving requirements with the competent authority when your situation is unclear; do not rely on a blanket claim that every foreign license is accepted indefinitely.

Compare insurance and deposits

Request the written coverage, exclusions, deductible or excess, deposit amount and release process. If relying on a card benefit or outside policy, confirm eligibility and what you must decline or purchase at the counter. Ask specifically about liability, damage, theft, tires, glass and roadside assistance. A low daily rate can exclude important costs.

Collection and vehicle inspection

Check the car with the agent and record existing damage, fuel level and mileage on the agreement. Confirm equipment, seat belts and any requested child seats. Save the breakdown and accident contact procedure before leaving. Resolve discrepancies while the agent is present.

Driving and parking decisions

Plan routes before setting off and allow time to become familiar with the vehicle and traffic. Avoid driving tired after a long flight. Do not drink and drive, and do not leave valuables visible in the parked car. Check parking arrangements with your accommodation and avoid relying on uncertain roadside stops for luggage storage.

Before a road trip to Santo Domingo or Bayahibe, check toll payment methods, fuel stations, parking and the return route. Confirm any toll-device charges with the rental company. Plan unfamiliar journeys in daylight where possible. Obey posted limits and local instructions; this guide does not supply a universal speed limit for every road.

Return conditions and the airport journey

Confirm the return location, operating hours, fuel policy and late-return charges. Ask whether the branch is inside the airport or requires a shuttle. Allow for inspection and the terminal journey before the airline’s check-in deadline. Keep the return receipt and final charges for your records.

Choose the transport that suits the itinerary

Compare car-rental options with airport transfers and excursions that include pickup. Use the hotel-transfer guide when you need point-to-point transport rather than a vehicle for the whole stay.
